Need your help: Google Summer of Code

Hello ODK Developers,

This year’s Google Summer of Code (GSoC) program has been announced
and ODK will be applying! Yaw Anokwa and I will be taking on the
logistics as the Organization Administrators.

Google Summer of Code pairs university students of all levels
(undergraduate to PhD) for 3 months of code contributions to an open
source project. Students apply by submitting a project proposal and
those who are accepted are paid a stipend to work with their mentoring
organizations.

GSoC students often continue contributing to their projects after the
end of the program and we see it as a great way to build community and
bring long-term improvements to ODK while mentoring students from
around the world.

As part of the GSoC application, we will need potential projects for
students to work on and mentors who are willing to work with these
students. If you work with any of the ODK tools and have a project
idea, we encourage you to participate. Even a rough idea is valuable.
Participating can be a great opportunity to get valuable work done for
your organization while building capacity for the whole community.

To give you an idea of what these projects can look like, here is what
students built for our friends at OpenMRS last year:
https://wiki.openmrs.org/display/RES/Summer+Of+Code+2016

We are working on a short deadline! The application is due February 10th.

If you have a project idea, please add it to
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NjKDOjg0JiXYQWVJewcKeyHp1eX-CoQ4LHJwU7mycUw/edit#,
a Google Doc that can be modified by anyone with the link.

If you are a developer, we also encourage you to list yourself as a
mentor. Mentors must be able to work with their mentee weekly, answer
their technical questions, review their code and provide a final
evaluation of the student’s project. All communication will happen on
public channels and Yaw and I will be there to help! The full mentor
manual is at https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/resources/manual#mentor_manual

If you have any questions or comments, please respond to the list so
we can all discuss together.

Thanks,

Hélène.

Hi folks,

The project ideas link was wrong. You can find the document at

Looking forward to your project submissions!

Yaw
