ODK and SMS

I'm working with an organisation who are using an ODK solution in the field, but many of the locations are quite remote so wifi/mobile internet (3G/4G) connectivity is patchy at best, and often not available at all.

Apart from using ODK Briefcase to download/send the data at a later time (via a more reliable internet connection), are there any "off-the-shelf" or recommended solutions for sending completed forms (the critical/text parts of) from ODK to Aggregate via SMS, or any plans to add this functionality into the ODK (2.0) tools?

I know this question has been asked before, and I have started looking into a couple of possible solutions implemented by others (e.g. Media Mobile, RapidSMS), but from my understanding these are fairly bespoke solutions that move away from using the ODK tools (both client and server side), so wanted to ask the question here and see if there was any "official" recommendations or updates from the ODK team or other organisations that have implemented similar solutions.

If this is something that other organisations are in need of (or currently working on), please let me know as I would be interested to discuss further (and potentially partner with to develop a solution).

Many Thanks,
Andy

Did you mean mobilemedic.org? They seem to have created their own branch
https://github.com/medic/medic-collect of ODK Collect with SMS sending (
http://medicmobile.org/blog/medic-mobile-has-an-android-app-1). To
investigate ... We ended up having to write our own application with
cordova to send form data by sms.

Andy,

DataWinners App for Android is an ODK application. We are developing an SMS app that sends Questionnaires completed on the smartphone app as SMS messages. It is in beta now, but we already have a partner organization using it successfully. Let us know if you are interested in joining our beta test.

Andy,

It's on my todo list to merge the Mobile Medic functionality into
trunk. Have you had a chance to play with it? Does it do what you'd
like?

Hi Christina,

This looks interesting. Presumably the data that is received with this
solution goes into your organisations private database hosted on the
DataWinners servers? There's no integration with ODK Aggregate, just the
front-end smartphone app which is built on the ODK Collect codebase?

Hi Yaw,

Bit of a delayed response I'm afraid, but hopefully you'll still see this!

Haven't played with the Mobile Medic solution much, as although it looks
like it would manage the data comms via SMS in the way we're looking for,
is it not an entirely independent back-end system that the data would be
sent to, i.e. some kind of Mobile Medic server solution as opposed to ODK
Aggregate where we would want the data to be received. Or is the
suggestion to use (parts of) the Mobile Medic solution as some kind of
intermediary to receive the form data (by SMS) from the mobile devices and
then forward on to ODK Aggregate?

Hi Andy,

The plan is to merge the Collect SMS-sending side of things.
Implementers will need to provide an SMS-receiving themselves (e.g.,
Twilio). No ETA on when I'll be able to get to this.

Hi Yaw,

Ok, understood. So just to be clear, this would add the functionality on
the sending side of things (from ODK Collect/Survey on a mobile device),
but a separate receiving service of some kind would need to be implemented
(based on the Medic Mobile solution or a bespoke implementation using
something like Twilio or FrontlineSMS?) to receive the data and then
forward it on to Aggregate or any other data repository. I take it there
are no plans to incorporate that receiving functionality into ODK Aggregate
any time soon?

I can see how this could work with Twilio (or Frontline), although it
sounds like it would require a fair bit of work to implement a reliable
solution. Also, at the moment, Twilio (and Frontline if using the Cloud
service) is limited in where you can receive SMS via a virtual number, with
little (or no?) coverage across Africa, so would either require a physical
mobile/SIM to receive the SMS and forward on somehow, or the cost of
international SMS charges to send data in this way.

Would still be very interested to hear from anyone else that is already
working with ODK (and Aggregate) and sending/receiving data over SMS or
looking to do this, so please do get in touch or post to this thread if
that sounds like you/your organisation!

Andy
