ODK and Symbian

ODK Devs - I've got a question that I tried to answer for someone today.

Question: Can we use ODK Collect on the Symbian devices? What would that
take?

My Answer:
The ODK is a "port" of the javarosa library onto the android OS with the
inclusion of additional java libraries (related to specific characteristics
of the Android OS and the device I/O - meaning image process, gps, motion
detection, etc).

Symbian has its own SDK (software development kit). They also support java
application development, and python. That SDK/environment would include
libraries specific to the Symbian OS and device components (drivers).

I think it would be readily possible to port the ODK Collect to Symbian
(on the order of 2-3 devs for 1-3 months) and leveraging the javarosa
libraries, however, based on my participation/lurking on the odk-developer
forums this is not a popular request. That is, its not currently on the
immediate roadmap.

odk wraps the javarosa library with android goodness. some versions of
symbian can run j2me code so it should be able to run javarosa's j2me
client.

all that said, if nokia isn't using symbian, why should anyone else?

As stated, you would not be running ODK Collect, but running the javarosa
j2me client ( https://bitbucket.org/javarosa/javarosa/wiki/Home ).

If nobody responds here, the developer's instructions for installing the
latest j2me app build are here:

thread I found regarding Symbian.

Any update on running ODK Collect on Symbian? Has anyone else done
modifications to ODK Collect to make this possible? Any help/code sharing
very much appreciated.

Hi,
I don't know how HTML5 compliant the Symbian browser is, but you could also
try out enketo, or the "web forms" of formhub. Here is a quick form to
check if it works: http://kw7wx.enketo.formhub.org/webform
If it does, all formhub forms as auto-linked to enketo forms on upload.

cheers,
