Odk collect 1.1.7 rc1

hello all,

we just posted odk collect 1.1.7 release candidate 1 to the website.

this release candidate includes fixes for the reported issues. some of
these include:

  • no more null error messages
  • repeats can now loop n times
  • custom urls append properly
  • no crash if languages missing in form
  • form chooser intents fixed
  • location provider crashes fixed
  • circular redirects fixed
  • lots of other random bugs

you can download the new beta at
http://code.google.com/p/opendatakit/downloads/list

we need to do some ui cleanup, but we think this release is very
close. please try it out, and report any issues (or feature requests)
you have at http://code.google.com/p/opendatakit/issues/list

thanks again for all your bug reports so far!

FYI in the process of debugging this certificate error I'm getting, I
installed 1.1.7RC1. Whereas once I was getting a 'failure' message
when I tried to get new forms, now the app crashes. I looked at the
logcat and it seems the 'no certificate' exception is no longer being
caught...

This is great. Thanks odk team for the great work.

I tried collect on a device (and emulator) running android 1.6. I get a
force close when I try to send finished data. see attached file.
I have opened an issue for it:
http://code.google.com/p/opendatakit/issues/detail?id=270

Submitting works well on a device (and emulator) running android 2.3

Yaw,

I'm in Mongolia and am testing the Collect 1.1.7 Release Candidate in the
field.. The field staff have been using it on two phones as a test, and
find it to be at least as stable as the beta, and it fixed a critical GPS
issue, so... I'm about to recommend we move all phones to RC1. If I hold
off another week is there a good chance the final release will occur? The
benefit would be to use the Market distro and avoid this deployment hassle.

Thanks!

hey james,

glad that patch worked! if you find it stable, please use it. we can't
make any guarantees about when the final binary will ship.

thanks. and if it's with your custom server, it'd be great to get test
access so i can reproduce the bug.

just so everyone is on the same page, the problem is that tom's server
uses a geotrust certificate that android (at least in 2.3) doesn't
have as a trusted root ca.

it's a long standing bug
(http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=11231) and there
aren't a lot of good solutions.
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2642777/trusting-all-certificates-using-httpclient-over-https/6378872#6378872
has a good discussion.

i propose we do the fourth option. create a custom socket factory that
uses the default android cert keystore, but falls back on a compiled
into collect store if the server fails to verify with the default.
then in that alternate keystore, we'll maintain a list of some of the
popular root cas.

practically speaking, this means we will be excluding self-signed
certs. is that going to be a problem for folks?

Here's one weird bit: My site loads fine in the 2.3 and 2.2 browsers,
but don't work in ODK. This makes me think the later version browsers
are doing a version of what you are suggesting in your email???

Speaking of which, the way I read the fourth option, self-signed
certificates are not excluded...

In any case, it's awesome that you guys are discussing how to
accommodate my low-rent certificate! But I would not expect you to
have this working by the time we deploy in the Fall. So I may just
refund the Geotrust cert and buy one from someplace that I know will
work.

Suggestions? Verisign is waaay too expensive. Thawte has a cheap
option (SSL123), but now that stackoverflow discussion has me worrying
that won't work either. But google uses Thawte and seems to do okay, I
think... Any other ideas for affordable certs? What has worked for
other folks? I only need a single domain protected, no SANs.

Or if you all think this won't take too long maybe I can wait. I could
also offer some hours in getting this working, but my experience in
this area--SSL socket programming--is thin...

adam,

please attach a stack trace to
http://code.google.com/p/opendatakit/issues/detail?id=342. it's what
we need to find the bug.

if you are familiar with adb, run 'adb logcat' while reproducing the
crash. if that makes no sense to you, download
https://market.android.com/details?id=org.jtb.alogcat and use that to
get the crash log.

thanks,

yaw
