ODK Collect 1.2 released to Google Play -- and updated on the downloads page (be sure to install the new apk)

I updated the ODK Collect 1.2 APK on the downloads page:
http://code.google.com/p/opendatakit/downloads/list

The changes w.r.t. the earlier rev 1012 APK are:

  • new string translations
  • if there is a savepoint of an unsaved form, the next time you open that
blank form, you get the savepoint rather than a purely blank form.

Google Play should present this as an update available to the 1.1.7
installation on all phones running Android 2.1 or higher.
ODK Collect 1.2 doesn't support earlier Android OS versions.

Thanks!

I updated this morning on my HTC Incredible 2 running Android 2.3.4, and
noticed now a gray bar appearing along the right edge of some of my
screens--in some cases, it disappears when I close the popup keyboard, but
other screens (e.g., the title page) where it shows up are just note
prompts so have no keyboard. Can't see any consistency, but can do a
detailed check and get a screenshot later if necessary.

Anybody else seeing this?

Jerry,

1.2 has a different scrollbar than 1.1.7 -- it's larger, translucent
and doesn't disappear after you scroll. Is that the behavior you are
seeing?

There is already an issue opened on the scroll bar being too big on
some layouts (I opened it). Anyone who has suggestions feel free to
add it to http://code.google.com/p/opendatakit/issues/detail?id=620

A big issue for many users of ODK Collect is that data collectors do
not realize they need to scroll down to answer the rest of the
questions. (We have heard this from several groups) While scrolling is
generally unobtrusive on smart phones (as you mentioned) several user
studies done in the Winter and Spring of 2012 showed a usability
problem with ODK collect on people not realizing there was more
information below and they needed to scroll down as there were no
visual queues on when they should be scrolling.

The big scroll bar was a proposed solution although I think there is a
possibly a better solution out there. I think a scroll bar half that
size would be better but we generally ship small updates after release
and I figured this would be one of them. I decided not to try to hold
up the release (even though I suggested that in the ticket) because of
the the many other features that people are waiting on.

Suggestions welcome from the community.

Thanks for the backfill. I will comment on that page and hope in the meantime the bar might be made optional.
