ODK collect translation

Dear all,

I would like to translate ODK collect in Norwegian, i.e., the menu
options and instructions to be displayed in Norwegian.

May I please ask for you help regarding this issue and how can I setup
ODK Collect in Eclipse for customization?

Thanking you for you help.

Kindest regards,
Selvmordsforskning

selvmord,

i'm assuming you want to translate the odk collect application and not
the forms that you put in odk collect.

collect uses the android localization framework described at
http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/resources/localization.html.
if you check out source of the project, you'll find all the english
strings in res/values/strings.xml. if you add the norwegian
translation to res/values-no/strings.xml and you switch the phone's
locale to norway, it'll switch collect to those translations. if you
want to default to norwegian, then replace the english strings in
res/values/strings.xml to norwegian.

you sound like a developer, so maybe i can convince you to help us
solve the problem of localization more broadly. could you explore some
of the solutions at
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2520891/any-collaborative-tool-website-to-localize-an-android-app?
i think if you could help us understand something like crowdin using
norwegian as an example, we could mobilize the community and translate
collect into more languages...

It would be great to have an option for the localization of the interface.
Is there any way to do so? As I understand looking at the thread it needs
some advanced skills and better skills in programming.

Dear Yaw,

Thank you for your detailed instructions which helped me get going.

I will most certainly have a look at crowdin and will get back to you.

Sorry for the cross posting.

I wonder if this problem might be an opportunity to standardize the
way translations are done in the domain of data collection (not just
on Android). There must be lots of similarity on the strings used in
the different solutions and we should try to make the most of that
IMO. I read through the various Open Rosa 1 API compatibility
requirements and I saw nothing about localization (apologies if there
is something).

As a suggestion Pootle is GPL
(http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/pootle/copyright) uses .po
files, can be used locally as well as saas and as a bonus the
developers are from Africa.
Like Yaw said probably worth some more discussion anyway

There are two translations to be done -- one for ODK Collect screens proir
to selecting a form to edit, and then the text displayed within that form.
The former requires compiling in the translations provided by the community
into the ODK Collect executable. The later can be done through the
translations support of the form generator (e.g., XLSForm).

The Collect executable (apk) already has a number of different translations
that have been provided by the community, including:

ca, de, es, fr, id, it, lt, nl, no, pt, ro, sw, vi

To produce a new translation, edit the attached XML file, replacing the
english text with a translation. No need to set up an eclipse environment.
When done, create a new issue here:
http://code.google.com/p/opendatakit/issues/list identifying the language
of the translation, and attaching your updated xml file.

I will then generate a candidate build for you to test with, and after you
OK that, the changes will become available in the next maintenance release.
