ODK Collect v2025.3 Beta: more accurate barcode scanning, more feedback when refreshing forms

This will be a smaller release that we’re hoping to get out at the end of August or beginning of September. We look forward to your feedback!

Why we do betas

ODK Collect betas are an opportunity to get community feedback on upcoming releases. If you have an ongoing data collection campaign, we recommend quickly verifying your form on a test device. We will keep sharing new betas as we respond to your feedback and will let you know when the beta is a release candidate.

Joining the beta program

To join the beta program, find ODK Collect in the Play Store on your device (not in the web browser) and scroll all the way down. Please don't join the beta with a device or account actively used for data collection! In particular, note that joining the beta is account-based. If you use the same Google account across multiple devices, do not join the beta with that account.

Leaving the beta program

You can leave the beta program from the bottom of the Play Store listing at any time. Once you leave, you will get the next production update when it is released. If you need to go back to the previous production release, uninstall and reinstall the app. Please make sure to back up or submit any important data.

What to check in this release

  • :selfie: More accurate QR code and barcode scanning. Also allows scanning poorly printed codes or codes in difficult light conditions, powered by ML Kit. We’re interested in your feedback if your forms involve scanning difficult codes or you are using older/slower devices.

  • :wireless: More feedback when refreshing forms by tapping the refresh icon in Start new Form in “Exactly match forms on server” mode (default for Central). Users will now see a persistent notification while a download is happening.

  • :wastebasket: Improved project deletion so you can now delete a project even if it has unsent submissions. This is particularly valuable for draft projects.

We have just put out a new beta. We are now doing regression testing and expect to release early next week unless any issues are found.

If you use barcode scanning, we encourage you to take time to try this beta with the codes that you use! If you have any codes that are still hard to scan or work in conditions in which scanning is still tricky, please let us know.
