ODK Error: "document has no root element"

2 out of 30 surveyors today have gotten an error message on their PDA
"document has no root element." One surveyor got this in the middle of the
survey and could not move beyond this point. He began the survey again,
only to get the same error message at the same point. The other surveyor
got this message at one of the first few questions in the survey and, like
the other, could not swipe past this point even when he started the survey
over. Each supervisor has been in the field and done 16 (very long)
surveys total with no issues whatsoever until today.

Looking at previous posts on this error message, I see that it can often be
solved by reformatting the SD card and reinstalling ODK Collect. First,
would it also work to reformat the SD cards and just copy all the folders
that get added to the SD card when you first install ODK Collect? This
would be easier for us, since internet access is scarce at best in the
field here in Sierra Leone. Second, could this be linked to the SD cards
running out of memory?

Thanks in advance for your much needed help!
Sam

It is unlikely the SD Card has run out of memory, unless you are capturing
a lot of video clips.

I am unfamiliar with this error, but if it is SD-card related, it may be
that the SD Card was not fully seated into the device. A simple first step
is to remove and re-insert the SD Card.

Otherwise, yes, you can certainly copy the ODK directories (everything
under 'odk' ) on the SD Card to your laptop, reformat the card, copy back
the directories, and re-install the SD Card (the 'odk' directory tree is
the only portion of the SD Card that ODK Collect pays attention to).

To understand the cause further, we would need an error log to be captured
very soon (minutes) after the failure occurs. See

Just to close this loop: You were right: I believe it's simply that the SD
cards were not placed back properly into the PDAs. Once we removed and
replaced the SD cards from the 2 problem PDAs, they were able to work fine.

Thanks!

Thanks. Glad to hear it wasn't a software problem
