ODK form in Arabic

Can anybody help?

I want to develop ODK form with data stored in English at the back end, but
on front end the questions are shown in Arabic. I have used XLSForm form
design, and keept:

hint::arabic

label::arabic

But I am unable to convert the .xls form to XML.

Any help on this point is highly appreciated

Hi Irum, What error message are you getting when you try to convert your
form? If you upload your xlsform to the mailing list or send it to me, I'll
be able to look into this issue further.

Are you representing Arabic characters as text or images?

Dear Nathan,

Thanks for your reply, I have managed to get my ODK form present data in
Arabic i.e. the questions and options are presented in Arabic. Is there a
way so that the software takes Arabic data as well? Right now the data is
not stored in an understandable format and dummy characters and saved
instead of Aabic.

Would be extremely obliged for any support in this regard.

Thanks

Irum

Irum,

Check at every stage of the pipeline to make sure you are getting the
right characters. For example, does the XML that gets saved to the SD
card have the right characters? Are you checking with a UTF-8
supported text editor like Notepad++? What about that data when it
gets to ODK Aggregate or ODK Briefcase? And what happens if you export
a CSV from either Aggregate or Briefcase?

Alternatively, maybe you can try a non-Arabic language with some
special characters. Do words with accents work (like été or François)
work as select options or text input?

Finally, what device and Android version are you using?

Note also that if you are working with Excel and CSV files, you must save
the csv file to disk, then manually import it into Excel -- opening the
file into Excel directly from a browser will not work.

When you do manually import the csv file into excel, you must set the
import file character set to UTF-8 (there are a few posts on the
opendatakit@ group about this, and also info on the web on this limitation
in MS Excel).
