ODK in Uganda

Hi,

Thanks for an interesting tool!

I've just arrived to Uganda on a working trip DanChurchAid, a Danish
NGO. In 1½ week I'll go to Malawi. One of the purposes of my trip is
to test the ODK.

With a normal MSN SIM-card, however, I cannot upload data. Needless to
say, the server preferences have been set from home and worked fine in
Copenhagen. Do I need a special data-connection? How do I find out if
such one is available? Do you have any experience with connectivity in
Africa?

Thanks in advance,
Ole

hi ole,

odk needs a gprs data connection. my guess is that your sim card has
not been configured for data. try going to the web browser and see if
you can browse. if you can, then your connection is setup. if you
can't then something else is wrong -- you probably haven't set the
correct apns. i'm glad to connect you to some of our partners at
grameen or makerere if that would help...

I have used GPRS in Uganda. It does work, but it has to be configured, it is
not activated by default. Are you using MTN?

If you are in Kampala, you can probably go into the MTN office and they will
sort it out for you. If not, you are supposed to be able to do it by texting
some code, you can call tech support and get the code.

I am in Malawi now and odk works fine on the zain gprs network. You will
need to go to their office or a service centre to get the sim card
activated.

Am in Uganda, Kampala and have ODK working on the Orange network. All the
other networks (MTN, UTL, Zain, Warid) have gprs.
Are you in Kampala or somewhere else? We could meet and see how i can help.

If we keep uppermost in our minds the unkind and unjust acts of others, we
shall find it impossible to love them as Christ has loved us; but if our
thoughts dwell upon the wondrous love and pity of Christ for us, the same

Hi folks,
Just as a reminder/suggestion to log this kind of
how-I-connected-to-the-local-GPRS-service on Jonathan Donner's site:
http://www.mostmobiles.net/ushahidi/reports. It's set to become a great
resource for research but also for people find out about local mobile
Internet options before deploying to do ODK work. More about the project on his
blog http://jonathandonner.com/archives/147.
