ODK vs Formhub

Hello. Please excuse me if this is a silly question but I'm new to this
kind of software. What is the difference or the connection between Formhub
and ODK? They seem to be very similar but I can't tell if they are
competing softwares or if Formhub is a simplified version of ODK.

I work at an NGO in Uganda as we are looking at shifting out data
collection to tablets. I like what I've seen of ODK but someone at
headquarters suggested Formhub instead.

Thanks!

I would not call Formhub a competing version, instead Formhub is
complementing ODK by expanding the options for users. The ODK core team and
Formhub team talk, share ideas, and even code. Formhub is simply a
different choice for the server component of ODK. Open Data Kit (ODK) is
actually a kit (or suite) of software tools, various organizations use some
of those tools and replace others. The ODK core team is small and does not
have the resources to fulfill all use cases so the ODK team welcomes new
tools people think will be helpful. ODK was designed to be a modular
platform that allows any component to be replaced with another tool they
find useful. Many people use ODK Aggregate, many people use Formhub. They
meet a different set of requirements for people. Aggregate is designed to
allow you to completely own the data and server (you can owner the server
for free on GAE). The great thing about formhub is they run a service for
people who don't want to worry about the server component. There are also
other options like SurveyCTO.

Basically ODK is platform that the ODK core team encourages people to
expand, change, and build upon. Formhub is a great example of this because
it fills a need.

For lack of a better place to call them out, the various tools built upon
one or more parts of the ODK platform are listed on our help-for-hire page
