Photo direction included in ODK?

Dear all,

I am wondering, if the direction of an image beeing taken can also be captured additional to the coordinates by ODK collect?

Thanks,

Gernot

Gernot,

Not directly, but there is a compass widget.

I guess Gernot is talking about geo-tagging. I think the coordinate can be
captured by the camera app used to take pictures. I've done this using
Android native camera app (by Google). In our yet to release version of our
survey app (based on ODK Collect of course), we support built-in camera
app, which is capable of taking coordinate as well.

Trung,

If it's embedded in the image, then it's not going to be useful in the
common analysis tools.

Are you planning on extracting location/bearing from the image in some
post-processing step?

Yaw, Trung,

In our current mobile data capture workflow we use a Camera App (GeoCam Pro) for taking georeferenced images. Here we need beside position (x,y) also the direction/bearing, in which the image was taken. This geolocation information (x,y,bearing) is stored in the standard EXIF. In a postprocessing step we use this information in order to store it in a data base. Not elegant, but it works.

As ODK is also capturing at least x and y for georeferencing of the images, and, as I assume, utilize the same sensor data as the camera app of the mobile device, having here bearing as an additional attribute would be perfect.

Yaw, Gernot,
I guess Gernot just clarified my point. RTA's survey (based on ODK collect)
has already supported taking geo-referenced images (as well as videos,
audio) with its built-in cam app. We will soon release it.

Maybe we can support taking direction/bearing. Let me talk to my team.

Cheer,
Trung.
