Photos are empty files

What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. When I try to capture an image in ODK Collect I get an empty jpg
    file.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
When I capture an image I should be able to see the image with the
option to replace it, instead there's no picture but the button to
replace the image is there. The jpg file saved on the sdcard for the
instance is an empty file. The camera works fine, I was able to take a
picture and email it to myself.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
ODK Collect v1.1.4 downloaded from the market.
Firmware version 1.5
HTC Magic

Thanks for the help, Andrew

Here's the log from when I take a picture:

Hey Andrew,
Collect is built for Android 1.6 and above. There were significant upgrades
to the camera app between version 1.5 and 1.6. Can you upgrade to 1.6 and
let me know if you still see that issue? Thanks for reporting this; we
forgot to upgrade our android version information in the code.

Anyone have an easy way to upgrade phones? Is CyanomodGen the easy way?

Thanks for the help, Andrew

It'd be awesome if we could make an image with ODK Collect on it to
quickly and reliably upgrade all the phones.

With an HTC Magic (and most all android phones) you should be able to
connect to the internet (wifi or cellular), and hit:
menu -> settings -> about phone -> system updates. If you're running 1.5
and it says your system is up to date, you may have to wait a few minutes
for the OS to check to see if there's an update.

cyanogenmod is a great rom -- i use it on my magic and my nexus one.
if your manufacturer doesn't have an update, cyanogenmod is basically
your own option. as to an android build with collect, it's a great
idea for someone in the community to try to do!

I installed cyanogenmod yesterday, it's bad ass and it solved my
problem. But, now I have a new problem, the photos I'm sending through
ODK Collect are higher res than we need, any solutions out there? I
wanted to change the camera settings, but I'm having a hard time
finding them.

Thanks for the help, Andrew

The files are in the computer!

I finally figured out I could scroll through the camera settings to
change the resolution. I like how customizable the desktop is, I
deleted the four extra desktops and now have a single desktop with
only ODK Collect on it.
