Playing pre-recorded audio for each question

Hi,
I'm new to the community and am really excited to see the great work
you all are doing! Sorry if my question is quite basic. I'm running an
epidemiological study with teens in South Africa and am exploring the
possibility of using ODK for 'self-interviews' on sexual behaviour. We
would show participants how to use the technology and then they would
complete the survey on an Android themselves.

Limited English literacy is likely to be a challenge for some
participants and we have read in the literature that audio-assisted
surveys improve response rates. I'm wondering...

Can I pre-record short audio files (one per question) and get them to
either (a) be played automatically when the participant gets to a
question or (b) be toggled on by the participant pressing a play
button? I'd be happy with either option, though option A is slightly
preferable.

The questionnaire will also involve some skip logic - would you
recommend using PurcForms over ODK Build?

Many thanks!

hi zak,

forms can have audio multimedia in questions. currently, they play
when you press the button near the question text. if you have a
developer, it's a minor code change to have it play automatically.

as far as designers, odk build and xls2xforms are easy to use.
purcforms has a (small) learning curve. if your survey has more than
10-15 questions, you should probably try xls2xforms or purcforms.

none of the form designers allow you to bundle multimedia just yet, so
you'll have to edit the xml to support that. i'd suggest you design
the forms as needed with question text in place, then you can add the
audio when you are done.

hope that helps,

yaw

Thanks Yaw. We'll have several dozen questions, so I'll look into xls2xforms
as a builder. It sounds like I'd just have to record the audio, put the
audio files onto the Android, and change the code for each question to
reference an audio file. Correct?

Can you recommend a cheap Android model that will work well with ODK? I'd
ideally purchase them in bulk (likely 30 or so).

Appreciate your help.

We have a new version of xls2xforms that supports multimedia forms.
Once you try out the one that is out there, contact Jeff Beorse
(jbeorse@cs.washington.edu) about getting access to his new version.
ODK seems to run pretty well on all Android models including tablets.
It is really a choice of cost and form-factor.

Gaetano,

It would be great to get his and merge it back into the master.

We recently added supports for commenting out lines ie)

Add a section header with comment or # then fill in # for the cell that you
want to comment out.

We're also in the process of making the branch logic easier to represent in
excel.

I'll ask Andrew to add to the site the new changes.

Thanks,

Matt
