Problems taking GPS coordinates with ODK collect

Hello,

ODK collect is very impressive. However, I have noticed one problem.
The location function does not seem to successfully pull a GPS
coordinate on a Huawei Ideos U8150 (running Froyo). It just keeps
giving a "please wait a few moments" message. The GPS turns on, but
that message never goes away. Other applications get a location
within seconds. Is there a solution for this? Thanks!

Best,
David

hi david,

i don't have an ideos u8150 (yet) so i can't test. try the following...

  1. in your location and security preferences, make sure you have
    enabled using gps satelittes.
  2. download gps status from market
    (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2&feature=search_result)
    and see if that works.

Okay, this is try #5 to reply. Nothing seems to go through after an hour
and a half, so I am trying again.

I followed Yaw's suggestions. #1 is already enabled, and #2 runs itself
fine, but makes no difference to ODK collect. I've also tried restarting
the phone for good measure. Is there any way to get the location function
operational soon? Thanks.

Best,
David

sorry if this is double-posted - terrible connectivity...

I don't think this is phone-specific; I have 8 of them with me, and I
am able to collect GPS co-ordinates without a problem. They are a
little slow to pick up a signal (up to 5 mins) so I always get a
reading prior to starting a survey. Once I've done that once they are
pretty responsive even within a couple of km s.

I'd be happy to try your specific survey if you wan to send me the
form structure - can do it on a couple of phones in the unlikely event
thats is somehow form specific.

thanks for posting this matthew. it helps narrow things down. i don't
think it's form specific at all.

david, what version of collect are you running? 1.1.5? 1.1.6? where
did you get it from? web? android market? also, where did you get the
phone from? what carrier is it on?

I might also add that the GPS feature works on my phone in Episurveyor,
which I now read is based on the ODK Client, and is also open source. So,
perhaps somebody could could compare and/or merge the code to debug this?
Thanks.

Hi, I've had a related problem.

I've used a number of Forms, each of which requests the Location as
the first item. These have been tested on two HTC Wildfire phones
(2.2.1, T-Mobile, UK).

In both cases after downloading ODK Collect (Andriod Market place -
most recently on 31 March 2011), downloading a form, and then running
the App - the Location page reports "please wait a few moments" -
before ODK crashes.

In both cases turning off the phone, removing the battery for 10
seconds, then restarting cured the problem. NOTE that simply switching
the phone off, then on, didn't cure the problem.

Hope this helps.
