Just out of curiosity, isn't your goal to get redcap forms to ODK collect
XML? Not sure why you are asking about going the other way. I did an export
of the data dictionary in redcap to see what it looked like. My guess is
that it would take quite some programming to parse the XML or the CSV of
the redcap datadictionary into a compatible ODK collect form.

Redcap validates the data collected, and my boss would like to have a
wireless survey data collection tool that is compatible with
RedCap--therefore, I'm trying to find a way to both import the survey
format from RedCap to ODK and then upload the survey results from ODK to
RedCap.

I found that to upload the results from ODK to RedCap, we could use ODK
Aggregate to download the data into a .csv file--which I should be able to
convert to an excel .xls file and then upload to RedCap.

Does this process sound feasible?

Sounds painful and error prone. The cleanest approach is to build ODK
support into REDCap so it can generate and accept XForms on the fly.
It's functionality we discussed with the REDCap team ages ago, but it
never got traction.

XML? Not sure why you are asking about going the other way. I did an export
of the data dictionary in redcap to see what it looked like. My guess is
that it would take quite some programming to parse the XML or the CSV of the
redcap datadictionary into a compatible ODK collect form.

Why did it not get traction?

REDCap is becoming a program WELL used by many research universities--it
would be definitely worth the time and energy to make this an easier

I agree with you that it would be useful, but the core team only has
so many cycles. Those who think that REDCap integration would be
awesome are best positioned to make it happen.

The easiest way to get traction is to fund developers in the ODK
community (http://opendatakit.org/help/help-for-hire/) or REDCap
community to build it and contribute it back to both projects.

awesome are best positioned to make it happen.

The easiest way to get traction is to fund developers in the ODK
community (http://opendatakit.org/help/help-for-hire/) or REDCap
community to build it and contribute it back to both projects.

A big limitation with REDCap is that it is a closed consortium with minimal
documentation on its interfaces available to developers outside the
consortium, and no test servers or other means for developers outside the
consortium to validate their interfaces to REDCap servers. This means
that users
and developers within REDCap will need to initiate and lead the integration
with ODK.

The existing REDCap publisher, already integrated into ODK Aggregate, was
developed and contributed back to ODK from users within the REDCap
community.

However, the REDCap implementation at that time seemed to do its own
non-standard idiosyncratic parsing of HTTP request headers, and that was
incompatible with the file attachment submissions ODK produces using a

afterward, without initiating the needed changes within the REDCap
implementation to correct the header parsing problems. It would be great to
get this publisher fully working.

Erin,

The difficulty is that development resources are limited -- certainly on
the ODK side, certainly on the REDCap side too -- and so good ideas in
principle don't automatically have lots of development resources invested
in them. Software development is costly, especially if something is going
to be maintained.

We've thought about connecting SurveyCTO better to REDCap, but then we've

A RedCap publisher was contributed many years ago.

Upon later testing, it was discovered that the RedCap server requires a
specific ordering of Header fields in requests sent to it (this is a
non-conformance with HTTP protocols).

This may or may not have been fixed. If it has, then everything should
work. i.e., give it a try.

If it has not been fixed in the RedCap source code, then you will need to
work with RedCap developers to fix their server implementation.
