Replacement for Enketo

I see Enketo will drop free web access from 1 June 2015.
We used it to input forms for users that don't have Android phones. Other
than paying, are there perhaps an alternative? We load about 1 form a day,
so its very low usage.

Setting up enketo-express is very simple.

  1. Launch a amazon AWS EC2 ubuntu 14.04 instance. The default script works for ubuntu only.
  2. Install git and clone https://github.com/kobotoolbox/enketo-express
  3. Run setup/bootstrap.sh

If you want better security, install nginx and follow this thread:

Thanks for your advice Martijn, I am subscribed to the enketo users forum
too.

For reference, this is is the first time I've ever really dealt with
hosting web apps before and I am really impressed with the way ODK and
Enketo both work together - a walkthrough-type installer than combined the
two would be a great step.

If I manage to get it working on GAE I will try to document the steps
(unless I find someone else whose already done it!)

Hi - I am interesting in hosting my own Enketo as well, but quite new to
all this.

In the example above do you have to use EC2 or is the same thing possible
with Google App Engine?

The walkthrough and installer for getting ODK up and running on GAE was
very easy I found. Having said that there is still a free tier with EC2 to
try things out at least for 12 months.

Hi Richard,

I found some info here on deploying a nodejs app on Google App
Engine: https://cloud.google.com/solutions/nodejs/. It may be more work to
figure out. I would welcome a contribution to make this easy because of the
nice combination with ODK aggregate this would provide.

I always recommend DigitalOcean.com (referral link
https://www.digitalocean.com/?refcode=9e43ccb8961a) because they give you
more bang for your buck with respect to CPU cores and speed, compared to
EC2 (important for scaling Enketo).

If you get stuck ask questions on the enketo user forum
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/enketo-users. There are a bunch
of people that have it running in production using different providers and
linux distributions. As with anything, installing is much easier than
maintaining it reliably and securely in production.

Cheers,

Martijn
(developer of Enketo)
