Setting up 30+ phones with Google accounts and apps

Hi all

We are just looking at puchasing and setting up 30+ phones for use in
the field with ODK etc. and wondering what the best way to do it is -
and looking for some advice.

Should we set up each phone with its own google account with email,
apps etc or should we just have one google account for all phones. One
account would make it easy for administration as I can manage apps
online and push out to all phones in one go - but dont know if one
google account can support this many phones.

I understand that ODK collect uses the sim card number to identify the
data from each phone so that should be ok.

I would also like to add in apps such as wheres my droid or lookout
security to help track phones and lock if stolen. I would also like to
use google latitude to help plot where phones are as well. so this
might be a problem with so many phones on one account.

Also wondering if there is a way to mirror a phones set up and then
simply blast the information on to the phones rather than manually
configuring each one.

Big decider is if want each community recorder to be able to use
google chat on the phone or email each other individually - or me
email them individually. But if I set up unique and nameless google
accounts ie communityrecorder1@gmail.com then its dificult to create
google plus accounts for these non specific names.

Any thoughts on the pros and cons appreciated or examples of how
others have set it up.

Thanks

Jon

Jon,

For imaging phones, you might want to look at Titanium Backup
(http://matrixrewriter.com/android). You still have to do some manual
config, but it should make life a little easier.

You can re-use the same gmail account for all the devices.

I generally turn off the backing-up of my data ( Settings / Backup & Reset
) and
the turn off the syncing of the apps on the device ( Settings / Accounts /
select the gmail account / uncheck everything )

And don't forget. You can also bulk configure ODK Collect.
