Stick with ODK or jump ship to Kobo?

Hi Everyone

The inability of the current version of ODK to do cascading selections is
abit of a deal breaker for the forms I want to build .
While KoboCollect offers that functionality, I'd rather stay with the
source project than move to a surrogate of ODK.

Does anyone know when ODK might get cascading selections and other such
tweaks?

I can't install both apps on my phone as it comes from the same issuing
authority and I'm at a point where I have to pick a platform and charge
ahead. So just want to make sure that I'm backing the right horse (so to
speak).

Thanks in advance
Dustin

Dustin,

ODK and KoBo are very compatible, since KoBo is very much based on ODK. You
can still use ODK software, like ODK Build, Briefcase, and Aggregate. You
will need to install KoBoCollect to take advantage of the Cascading
Selections using Itemsets, and the easiest way to create your cascading
selections is to make them in the KoBoForm builder. But, we're big
believers in ODK, and when ODK adds features, we update the KoBo software
to take advantage of that, so I hope you will feel comfortable backing
either "horse". We have the same open-source ideal, and our code for
supporting itemsets has been submitted to JavaRosa. I am sure that it will
eventually find its way into the ODK Collect as well.

Yes, the issue is primarily a lack of developer attention toward merging
the various extensions of javarosa back into the main trunk of that
project. https://bitbucket.org/javarosa/javarosa/wiki/Home Once that merge
happens, the updated XForms parsing library can be dropped into ODK
Collect, and you will have all or nearly all the KoBoCollect cascading
selection functionality available in ODK Collect. If you have resources to
help that along, please do.

I am focused on readying several ODK tools for release by the end of the
year and will not have any significant time to pitch in and help.
