Tomcat 6 EOL

Is there any formal plan to address the impending EOL for Tomcat 6 in ODK Aggregate? I realize there are instructions for installing ODK Aggregate with Tomcat 7 (among a few other options), but these are still marked as unsupported. Is there a plan to transition the official, supported deployment to a more recent version of Tomcat?

"End of life for Apache Tomcat 6.0.x

The Apache Tomcat team announces that support for Apache Tomcat 6.0.x will end on 31 December 2016.

This means that after 31 December 2016:

releases from the 6.0.x branch are highly unlikely
bugs affecting only the 6.0.x branch will not be addressed
security vulnerability reports will not be checked against the 6.0.x branch
Three months later (i.e. after 30 March 2017)

the 6.0.x download pages will be removed
the latest 6.0.x release will be removed from the mirror system
the 6.0.x branch in svn will move from /tomcat/tc6.0.x to /tomcat/archive/tc6.0.x
the links to the 6.0.x documentation will be removed from tomcat.apache.org
The bugzilla project for 6.0.x will be made read-only
Note that all 6.0.x releases will always be available from the archive.

It is anticipated that the final 6.0.x release will be made shortly before 31 December 2016."

ODK Aggregate requires a Servlet 2.5-compatible web container, so it can
run in anything.

In that regard,* the web container we support* is more of a question of
whether we have verified the operation of, and provide detailed
documentation on, how to configure that web container so that it runs ODK
Aggregate.

We froze at Tomcat 6 largely because the WAR-auto-detect feature did not
require a server restart and the config files did not require any editing.

As Tomcat 6 reaches end-of-life, we will update our support sometime this
year to a newer Tomcat release, either 9 (if released) or 8.

At the moment, there are issues moving to Java 8 on AppEngine, so we cannot
currently support web containers that require Java 8 (I'm not yet aware of
any that do).
