Hey,
I'm currently trying to upgrade my server. I found that I have version 1.4.2. I have tried to follow the steps you posted in this discussion: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/opendatakit/vlndjo4y-aE. Unfortunately I have repeatedly got this password and username error. I know it has the correct permission settings and it is the correct version to begin upgrading. I have attached below the error. It seems incredibly simple but I know I am typing the correct password.

My first thought is that there is a special character or accent character
in your password that is being incorrectly interpreted (e.g., a backslash
or back-quote). If you have any punctuation characters, I would first try
changing your gmail password to see if that makes a difference to the
upload script. I would be horrified if it did, but also wouldn't be too
surprised. (If that fixes the issue, you can then change your password
back to what it was originally.)
If that doesn't fix the issue, let me know.

My second thought is that the underlying 'appcfg' command has a bad cached
value of your password. To clear the cache,
(1) Open a file browser
(2) Click on "Downloads"
(3) Then go up one folder level by clicking on the folder before the
"Downloads" in the top folder-path bar. If successful, the bar will change
to no longer display "Downloads", but just the folder name before that
(i.e., your username).
(4) Delete any file beginning with ".appcfg" There should be just one of
these (e.g., ".appcfg_oauth2_java_tokens" ).
