Use case for government field staff

Hi,

I'm with the City & County of SF and I'm interested in using ODK as a
platform for collecting field data to be used by multiple backend
systems. I was wondering if the scenario below is possible and if so
how much custom development would be required if any:

Field worker is able to view a list of work requests
Field worker is able to view a specific work request
Field worker is able to collect data associated with work request
Data is captured locally and pushed to Aggregate or external system
via HTTP post

Thanks

hi jay,

what you describe is definitely possible -- in fact we have this
tasking idea built in odk tables (soon to be released, but research
paper at http://opendatakit.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/nsdr-tables-final.pdf).

research != product, so it's hard to guess at how much work it will be
once you get into the details. perhaps you can reach out to some of
the odk implementation companies to give you a quote?
http://opendatakit.org/2011/09/list-of-odk-implementation-companies is
a good place to start.

Hi Jay,

I have been developing a task based system in association with RMIT which
incorporates odkCollect as one of the data collection options. This system
uses what we call a Micro Tasking protocol, that is a task could be handled
by a general data collection device such as odkCollect or it can be handled
by a small custom smart phone application. These custom apps can register
for the types of task they can handle. Given that tasks are defined by an
odk compatible XForm then odkCollect could handle any type of task.

We support push technology to get tasks on to the phones, this relates to
another aspect of the "Micro" in Micro tasking which is to allow iterative
collection, of small amounts of data, managed by a server side rules
engine.

I'm afraid we are a long way from the bay area however we will be publishing
the the first formal release of the code (which is open source) and
documentation within the next 8 weeks. Hopefully you may find it useful.

Regards

Neil

We have a budget for this project so I'm interested in the list of
vendors who could assist - preferably in SF Bay or CA. The link to the
list of implementation companies is an invalid URL.

Thanks.
