Using ArcView (ArcGIS) or some other GIS with results from Aggregate

Just wanted to know if anyone's using* ArcView* (formerly ArcGIS) with ODK
Aggregated data. I'm going to request a trial version, but wanted to know
if it was difficult to do the reporting where the data points (let's assume
shops) could be highlighted in different colours based on type of
shop/store (blue for hardware shops, green for supermarkets, pink for
clothing shops, purple for arts & crafts shops, etc.).
In addition, WHERE do we get the maps to overlay said data for a particular
region?? Is this part of ArcView or an additional cost? Will ArcView
transform my multi select data (ie. the store types as mentioned above)
into something meaningful or do I have to do some intermediate data
transformation?
Actually, is there something ELSE that does what ArcView can do but is
easier and/or less costly??

Cheers!

Yes, you can easily change symbols of structures based on type; you would
set the parameters once then as you add more data, those new structures
would be automatically symbolized based on type.

I've not used ODK to directly power a GIS but since ArcGIS can read pretty
much any data source; PostGre, MySQL, MS SQL, MS Access, and a variety of
spreadsheets I sure you can get something easily going.

The base maps (aerials, road maps, Topo maps) are part of the Esri software
when you buy it but if you choose to go with another software there are
several open data sources for that type of data too. But honestly Esri's
is a bit higher quality: you are paying for it as part of your ArcGIS
license.

Some other options ; TatukGIS - they have a free data viewer and a very
inexpensive GIS editing interface and highly customizable using C++ or
.NET. TatukGIS is a very powerful program and ranks right up there with
Esri's offerings but much much cheaper. Quantum GIS - open source and
highly customizable. Grass GIS - haven't played with that one yet but open
source as well. uDIG GIS - open source.

I'm eager to see what you come up with and feel free to throw any GIS
questions my way; that's my bread and butter for my main job.

Hi Guys!
Well I'm back! Took a little break after the first phase. The boss got the
local ESRI guys at the Nairobi office to lend a helping/training hand with
the final ArcGIS report for the client. My job was just to provide clean
data, so I handed everything over to them. After she presented the report,
they LOVED it!! So Phase 2 is now ready to roll.
Our last survey count was 2501 records (should've been about 3000 records
but certain products were not available when the secret shopper went to
various outlet shops/kiosks/street vendors.
I'll keep you guys posted on any new developments since the client wants to
use it for other areas of their business -- like employees out in the field
checking up on vendor pricing (randomly) and what product categories their
retailers sell, GPS location etc.

So, a BIG thanks to Mitch and company for answering my questions and/or
pointing me in the RIGHT direction.

~DataMax

Also, if it's mobile data collection you're interested in, check out ArcGIS
Mobile for windows, Android, and iOS. They have some free server space for
individuals to play with while you're deciding. It would take out the ODK
element though. Plus the downside to going straight Esri is COST! COST!
COST! Expensive!$$$

Feel free to email me direct with anything.

Hi Eric,
Thanks for the reply! We've already communicated via email. BTW, the survey
has started and we're now LIVE with 20 Android phones collecting data for a
project in East Africa. Will keep you posted.

Still figuring out how I'm gonna connect 3000 photos (300X240px) with the
data in an Aggregate csv file WITHOUT doing a browser copy/paste (for the
pic) into another table with a BLOB field. Hmmmnnn,

grants program for Google Maps Engine for eligible nonprofits in US,
UK,
Brazil and Canada.

Datamax from your description, Maps Engine is great for this kind of use
case - styling based on an attribute in the data. More styling features are
coming soon, too.

I'd love to see ODK users apply for grants! More info at

Note that if you use ODK Briefcase to download the data to your local
machine, it downloads all the images (these are not thumbnails, but are
full size) to your local machine.
If you then use Briefcase's Export functionality to generate your CSV, the
image will be copied to the media\ subdirectory where the CSV is being
generated, and there will be a relative path in the CSV to that image file
(e.g., media\1300754415347.jpg ).

This might get you farther along.

If you need thumbnails, you can then write an app that opens and resizes
all those images, for example.
