Using Build/Collect to create desktop forms

Hello,

I am new to Open Data Kit, and am creating my first form using the Build tool. When we roll out our survey, our primary users will be inputting data using laptop computers. Will they use a desktop version of the Collect tool to do this?

What I am wondering is if after I create a form using Build, can I then upload that form and fill it out using a laptop/ desktop version of the form (possibly Connect)? Would the Enketo tool help me with this, or does Enketo only work with XLS forms?

Thank you!
Michael Walton

Enketo is definitely the desktop tool.

··· -----------------

XLSForm generates an XML document.
Build also generates an XML document.

That XML document is what is used within Enketo and Collect to render the
form. And it is used by ODK Aggregate, Ona, SurveyCTO, GeoODK and other
servers to create the table to store the filled-in form data.

So you can use either Build or XLSForm with Enketo or Collect. And any of
those with any of the servers.

The caveat is that each of the tools supports a slightly different set of
features
. Be sure to test your surveys on all the tools you will be using
to make sure that the features you are using are supported on those tools
(including the servers and the processing of the filled-in forms data by
the server).

If you will want more complex forms, we recommend you learn and use the XLS
format, as it is much more expressive.

I am having trouble understanding how I get a document to upload to Enketo.
I watched a youtube tutorial where someone did this directly through the
ODK website, but they were using XLSForm. If I were to use Build to create
my form, then export that file to an XML format, how do I then upload that
document to Enketo? Can that still be done through the ODK website? Or will
I have to perform this step using either ODK Collect or ODK Aggregate?

Thank you for your help! Your last comment was very helpful.

"There was an error obtaining the webform. (Message:no account exists for

On your ODK Aggregate, go to the "Forms Management" tab.

On the "Forms List" sub-tab, Click on "Add New Form"

And select the XML file you downloaded from Build.

Hi Michael,

I believe you chose to use the paid service. You probably just need to
activate your account by picking a plan and confirming your payment option.

Alternatively, you could perhaps install Enketo
yourself: http://blog.enketo.org/install-enketo-production-ubuntu/, or use
any of the services that provide Enketo as part of their all-in-one service.

You can find some other troubleshooting threads, for both options,
here: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/enketo-users

Good luck,
Martijn

Thank you Mitch. I have taken care of all of that, but the only options
Aggregate is presenting me with under Forms Management are "publish",
"export", and "delete." Our users will be using android, but I currently
operate using an iPhone. Does this make it impossible for me to download
Connect? And is Connect the tool that will allow me to ask Enketo from the

Hey Martijn,

Thank you for your help! I apologize, I am just not very computer savvy.
But I loved what I saw on the Enketo website, which is why I am working so
hard to enable the Smart Paper service on my ODK Aggregate Page. If I
signed up for the paid service, that was my mistake, I was simply trying to
create an Enekto accoutn to enable the service on ODK Aggregate. I know
that I never selected a plan or entered payment information. I did enter
into the Site Admin-Preferences page on ODK Aggregate, and enter the
information that I received on the Enketo website after creating an
account. This made the Enketo button show up underneath the Webform heading
on my ODK Aggreate- Forms Management page, but whenever I click the link, I
am presented with the error message that I noted above. Do you have any
recommendations for solving this issue? Do I need to create an account on
another OpenRosa server? I am not looking for the paid service as of now,
because I am only testing the software for my organization, but from what I
have seen in your "tester" on the Enketo website, Smart Paper will meet my
organization's needs very well.

Thank you so much,
Michael

Thanks Michael,

There are only 2 ways to use Enketo to collect data, on mobile or desktop,
online or offline, for ODK Aggregate:

  1. Do what you did, but then you still need to activate your account by
confirming a plan and payment option. The free option is no longer
available. The "OpenRosa server" is your Aggregate server. Currently your
Aggregate server and your Enketo account are linked successfully, but the
account is just not activated. The error message should probably say 'no
activated account exists for this OpenRosa server'.
  2. Install Enketo on your own server. You can link it with your Aggregate
server. This way you have no limitations and are in full control of
    everything.

Good luck,
Martijn

Michael,

The home page at https://enketo.org/ outlines your options very nicely
(better than any of us could in this forum).

Best,

Chris

Thank you NMZ,

I found where I need to go in settings, but now it is asking for my Enketo
API. I was under the impression that it Enketo was a free addition to the
Aggregate service. Do you have to pay for a subscription in order to use
Enketo's smart paper forms?

On your ODK Aggregate, go to the "Forms Management" tab.

On the "Forms List" sub-tab, Click on "Add New Form"

And select the XML file you downloaded from Build.

I am having trouble understanding how I get a document to upload to
Enketo. I watched a youtube tutorial where someone did this directly
through the ODK website, but they were using XLSForm. If I were to use
Build to create my form, then export that file to an XML format, how do I
then upload that document to Enketo? Can that still be done through the ODK
website? Or will I have to perform this step using either ODK Collect or
ODK Aggregate?

Thank you for your help! Your last comment was very helpful.

Hello,

I am new to Open Data Kit, and am creating my first form using the
Build tool. When we roll out our survey, our primary users will be
inputting data using laptop computers. Will they use a desktop version of
the Collect tool to do this?

What I am wondering is if after I create a form using Build, can I
then upload that form and fill it out using a laptop/ desktop version of
the form (possibly Connect)? Would the Enketo tool help me with this, or
does Enketo only work with XLS forms?

Thank you!
Michael Walton
