I have just started (trying) to work with ODK for a farmer survey that I am
designing. After much studying of the ODK tools and explanations on how to
build and deploy a survey form, I find that I am still getting stuck in the
very initial stages. These are the steps I have taken so far:
Created the form in ODK Build
I have exported in to XML and saved it locally on my computer
I have downloaded ODK Validate 1.4.9
I have run the validation and receive this message:
[Fatal Error] NEI%20Vanilla%20Survey%202016.docx:1:1: Content is not
allowed in prolog.
XML is invalid. See above for the errors.
I am not programming savvy at all, so the XML file is a foreign language to
me and I have no clue where to start detecting the error (I attach the XML
file here).
I would be so very grateful if any one with more experience than I have
could point me in the right direction.
The sheet names are case sensitive. If you change that your form should
work.
There are few other errors (mostly typos) you will find. Attached is a
cleaned up version of it.

Looks like you are supplying ODK Validate a word document rather than an
xml file. To fix this copy the content out the word document paste in in a
text editor e.g Notepad or Notepadd++ then save the file as
".xml". Thats what you should supply to ODK Validate.

Ronald.

thanks for responding so quickly!
I have tried with the XML and Build files as attached but this doesn't seem
to be doing the trick.
Is it in the naming of the file perhaps (spaces)?
Another thing: when exporting the Build form, this box pops up that
requires me to fill in the line:
What is the "Aggregate Instance URI" and where do I find it?
I wish I had a step by step guide of all the platforms that I should set up
in the right order...

Thank you so much Sam, this worked perfectly and I am able to see my survey

Following instructions shared by Ronald earlier today, I have set up a

OK, I've worked it out: the whole time, I was trying to upload a file that
had "xml" in its extension. But I should have been loading the "text" file

Everything has worked out just as I expected and am testing the form on my

I have a bunch of "Yes/No" questions that I want to allow skipping, for
example:
Q7. If "No", skip to Q24
Q10 If "No" skip to Q11
Q13 If "No" skip to Q22
Q14 If "No" skip to Q15, If "Yes" skip to 16
Q22 If "No" skip to Q29, If "Yes" skip to 23
I am not clear on where to place this syntax in the relevance column: on
the questions that "should be skipped" or the question "to which it should
skip"?
Moreover, do I need to group questions in order to allow the skips?
This is my biggest challenge right now. Other than that, I am enjoying the
capability of this tool!

that had "xml" in its extension. But I should have been loading the "text"
file instead!
Everything has worked out just as I expected and am testing the form
on my device. Then I will be making changes to improve responses, include
jumps.
I may return to this forum with more questions, but for now I thank
everyone who has been so helpful!

Thank you so much Sam, this worked perfectly and I am able to see my

Following instructions shared by Ronald earlier today, I have set up
a project on the Google App Engine and downloaded and installed ODK
Aggregate. When trying to upload my survey form stored in xml format
however (attached), I encountered the following error message:

Have I got the wrong version of something? Is this due to recent
changes?
The sheet names are case sensitive. If you change that your form
should work.
There are few other errors (mostly typos) you will find. Attached is
a cleaned up version of it.
Kind regards,

Hello and Help!
I have just started (trying) to work with ODK for a farmer survey
that I am designing. After much studying of the ODK tools and explanations
on how to build and deploy a survey form, I find that I am still getting
stuck in the very initial stages. These are the steps I have taken so far:
Created the form in ODK Build
I have exported in to XML and saved it locally on my computer
I have downloaded ODK Validate 1.4.9
I have run the validation and receive this message:
[Fatal Error] NEI%20Vanilla%20Survey%202016.docx:1:1: Content is
not allowed in prolog.
XML is invalid. See above for the errors.
I am not programming savvy at all, so the XML file is a foreign
language to me and I have no clue where to start detecting the error (I
attach the XML file here).
I would be so very grateful if any one with more experience than I
have could point me in the right direction.
Your relevant choices (e.g., 'yes') don't match your select choices
(e.g., 'y').

Hello Yaw,
thank you, I've seen and used this, but don't seem to be getting it
right.
I have inserted a skip logic for a group of questions (see attached),
and irrespective of whether I select "yes" or "no", the skip occurs!
Please advise where I have gone wrong now.
Many thanks in advance,

I have a bunch of "Yes/No" questions that I want to allow skipping, for
example:
Q7. If "No", skip to Q24
Q10 If "No" skip to Q11
Q13 If "No" skip to Q22
Q14 If "No" skip to Q15, If "Yes" skip to 16
Q22 If "No" skip to Q29, If "Yes" skip to 23
I am not clear on where to place this syntax in the relevance column:
on the questions that "should be skipped" or the question "to which it
should skip"?
Moreover, do I need to group questions in order to allow the skips?
This is my biggest challenge right now. Other than that, I am enjoying
the capability of this tool!
