What3words addressing

Hi ODK Community,

We’d like to add the capability to ODK Collect to show the what3words address in the Record Location screen so field workers can tell beneficiaries and service provider parters the what3words address of the location (mock-ups attached).

what3words is a universal addressing solution which makes it easy for non-technical people to communicate precise location. what3words has made a 3x3 metre grid of the world and has named every square with 3 words. This makes it easy for beneficiaries and service providers to refer to the location, say it on the phone, write it down, and find it. More at www.what3words.com

I’d like to find out who we should talk to in order to:

a) add what3words to ODK and

b) find a programmer familiar with ODK who could implement this for us

Thanks,

Tim.

Hi Tim,

I'm a big fan of w3w, and have followed you guys for a while. Did you ever
manage to get this incorporated into ODK? I see w3w now has an API so, if
you didn't manage this in 2014, perhaps there's scope to do it now?

Calum,

I've reached out to W3W and pointed them to the issue at
https://github.com/opendatakit/collect/issues/139. Once they provide me the
information I need, I will update the ticket and work can begin.

Last time I spoke to them we would need to sign some legalese around using
their sdk and their is a few 100 pound a year license fee. I don't know
what this means for redistros of odk. Probably worth talking to w3w. I've
encouraged them in the past to wave this for odk to help get push adoption.

Key thing if value with w3w is they have an algo to develop the keys
offline so that's the main thing that would be used with odk I believe.
