Arabic language in ODK

my problem is that the resulted Excel sheet(result database ) is not
supported Arabic m so how can I solve this problem?

Azza,

Until you can provide step by step directions for the community to
reproduce the problem, it'll be hard for us to help. For example, you
do not mention what ODK tools you are using. XLSForm, Aggregate,
Briefcase, and Tables all use Excel.

Hi Yaw,
first of all , i use XLSForm to build the form ,then convert it to XForm
,and then upload it to the aggregate server(Google appengine), get the form
to data collect app.
Then send the finalized form to the server ,then export it as xls file .

Azza,

Does the data show up in in Arabic when you view it in ODK Aggregate?
And what happens if you open the CSV in a modern text editor at that
supports UTF-8? Does that work?

Azza,

I'm assuming you are using the ODK Aggregate VM? If so, there might be
an issue with non-ASCII characters. Have you tried exporting your
Arabic form on a copy of Aggregate running on Google App Engine?

Hi Azza,

Can you provide me with a ZIP of the contents of the /odk directory on your
phone.

Alternatively, if you have an ODK Aggregate instance set up, can you invite
me ( mitchellsundt@gmail.com ) as a developer and add me with Form Manager
permissions on that instance?

Hi Mitch, how did you manage to resolve this issue? I'm experiencing the same thing with some input Arabic text displaying as "راىؤلةؤلىؤلىؤلى" in Excel once the data is exported.

I need a dataset to work with.

If your form and collected data cannot be shared with me, please create a
simple sample form with arabic, download, fill out a few submissions, and
submit them to your ODK Aggregate instance.

Then, please use ODK Briefcase to pull your form (or the simple sample form
with arabic) to your PC (be sure to specify a new ODK Briefcase Storage
location if the original data cannot be shared with me), then zip up the
ODK Briefcase Storage location directory tree and send that to me (
mitchellsundt@gmail.com ).

Thanks,

Mitch

Excel is terrible at importing CSVs with Unicode characters. Try the
following...

  1. Open Excel
  2. Import the data using Data-->Import External Data --> Import Data
  3. Select the file type of "csv" and browse to your file
  4. In the import wizard change the File_Origin to "65001 UTF" (or
    choose correct language character identifier)
  5. Change the Delimiter to comma
