In Collect v2026.3, projected for mid-July, OpenStreetMap, USGS and Carto basemaps will be displayed using the Mapbox mapping library. If you use any of these basemaps in Collect, we recommend that you carefully try the beta.
Some functionality will change slightly. One noticeable difference is that you'll be able to continue zooming past the level where map tiles become blurry. Any settings you have set in Collect or in a configuration QR code should be maintained.
Previously, those basemaps were displayed using the osmdroid library which is no longer maintained. Removing it will help us develop better map features with greater confidence and bring the app download size down by 3 MB! ![]()
This change is most likely to affect developers and folks who maintain Collect forks because the Mapbox library requires an API key to use while osmdroid did not. We plan to migrate from Mapbox to Maplibre within the next couple of releases to address this. Developers may choose to skip v2026.3 to wait for a version with a map library that doesn't require an API key.
