Running ODK on PC Tablets?

Hello,

I hope that it's acceptable to write this email list with a basic question
about using ODK on mobile devices. I am hoping to use ODK to design a
country-wide, NSF-funded survey in Uganda. We wish to use tablets for data
collection however, and the tablets are PC rather than android.

In order for me to run ODK on a PC tablet, would I have to first switch it
to an android operating system? Or could I use Android SDK to simulate an
android operating system on these PC tablets? I'm told this works for most
apps, and so it seems like it would work for ODK - does it?

I'd be really grateful to hear thoughts or advice on this issue. (I'm
sorry - I'm waiting for IT at IFPRI to get back to me about the specific
make of the PC tablets, so I don't know this at the moment.)

Thanks very much,
Leah (Cornell PhD student in Applied Economics)

It is difficult to configure the emulator to use the PC's media capture
(e.g., barcode, camera, microphone) capabilities, and I do not know if GPS
or WiFi geo-location capture is possible.
If you expect to any of these things, you should test whether it is
feasible ASAP. Playing back audio, video or displaying images should not
be a problem.

The more complex the branching and relevance conditions in the form, the
slower the form will be when running under the emulator.

Depending upon the quantity of tablets you need, and the skill levels of
the survey takers, buying Android tablets may pay for itself in reduced
configuration and training costs, and reduced technical support during your
field study,

Mitch

Hi Mitch,

Thanks! I do not expect to use any of these capabilities - it's mostly
survey of questions. We would like to put in GPS data, but could also
download waypoints separately.

If I'm avoiding media capture capabilities, do you think that the emulator
would run ODK alright on PC tablets? (Again, sorry that I know know which
tablets specifically! Probably the answer depends in part on which
tablet.)

A fried of mine is concerned that the emulator will run ODK very slowly,
and/or that it will drain battery very fast. Given that this survey is
taking place in rural Uganda, and enumerators will only have access to
power in the evenings, fast battery drain would be a huge problem. Being
generally slow would also be a problem.

What do you think about those concerns? Any thoughts are appreciated!

Speed shouldn't be an issue -- the emulator seems to be fairly efficient
when you simply run an app.

I can't provide any more clarity. My best advice is to install everything
on your tablet and see how it performs.

Battery life will be dominated by the drain of the screen lighting and the
size of the battery.

Radio communications (WiFi and/or cellular) can also be a significant
drain. Consider running in Airport mode when in the field.

The running of the emulator and the screen navigations during the taking of
the survey will have negligible impact on your battery life.

Hey Leah,
If the tablets are not purchase d yet maybe you can try convencing the
funders to purchase android systems. Else you will run into a whole host of
problems.

Just to be clear -- I have been assuming from your first e-mail that your
project has other tools that are forcing you to use Windows tablets.

ODK Collect runs great on Android tablets. While most of our documentation
features screen shots and videos of the use of ODK Collect on a cellphone,
many recent field deployments are using the tablet form factor.

Hi Leah,

As Yaw mentioned, enketo may be a good fit for you, especially if you can
use a modern browser like Chrome (most used, so most tested). The forms
work offline as well, so extended periods without a connection should not
be a problem (unless the quantity of data you need to store before getting
a connection is huge). You can try e.g. this
form: http://wfl69.enketo.org/webform.

The enketo.org website is currently a bit rough (officially not yet
launched) but you should be able to launch your form (i.e. create a unique
URL) and test it to see if it meets your needs. If you're building your
forms with XLSForms, it would easiest to use formhub.org to host your form
manage data as enketo is integrated inside formhub.

Cheers,
Martijn
